So many places to choose from!
I'd also recommend Lisbon because the city is beautiful, unusual and interesting- you can enjoy everything a capital has to offer- lovely architecture, lots of history, great food and culture but in contrast to most capitals its small, laidback and easy to travel around, its not very polluted and has fantastic views and the best bit is that you can just jump on a train and be on a lovely beach in 20 minutes or less. If you do visit Lisbon make sure you also visit Sintra (Byron called it a glorious Eden) and the coast around Cascais. I think everyone who visits Portugal should go to Lisbon and I saw a programme on Sky recently that said it was in the top ten best city destinations in the world so its not just me!!
Other places you could consider include the Green Coast above and around Porto as the name suggests its much greener and more lush than other parts of Portugal and ou can do watersports, visit vineyards, explore the city of Porto itself and much more.
If you'd like to go to the Algarve then maybe you could travel around a bit. The western (try Sagres, Lagos etc) and eastern (Tavira) areas are less developed so you get a better impression of the old Algarve, whereas central Algarve (vilamoura, Albufeira etc) is very much aimed at the tourist so are good if you want lots of lively bars, restaurants, shops and other amenities (and lots of other tourists) on your doorstep.
Have a look at this website http://www.portugal-sport-and-adventure.com for more ideas. There's a destination for everyone in Portugal it just depends what you like. There are airports in Lisbon, Faro (for the Algarve) and Porto and they're all near the coast.
Have a lovely holiday!

You should start by Lisboa, the capital. It has the whole package: museums, restaurants, bars, gardens, beautifil beaches around it, astonishing monuments, great river view, plenty of hotels. Just buy yourself a tourist guide, and choose those things that appeal to you the most. You'll have plenty to choose from.
If you rent a car (which I don't advise to visit Lisboa per se), you can visit Sintra, Cascais, Ericeira, and all the villages that follow the coast line after Lisboa.
It's a very beautiful and bright city by day, and with lots of places to go by night.
I'm from Portugal, and just keep on visiting it every chance I get.
Enjoy!

Portugal is not all about the coast. travel inland where they have grape farms where they make wine such as in Oporto and dont forget the Serra Estrella, the highest mountain in contiental Portugal. Also think about going to the Azores or Maderia Islands in the Atlantic, beautiful, just beautiful!!!

It depends on what you are interested in - activities wise...and when you will be going to Portugal because throughout the year there are various different feasts, parties - etc taking place in different parts of Portugal.

It depends on how old you are and what sort of things you like.
Do you like partying, clubs, pubs or peace and quiet, sunbathing or culture?
Are you going to the North...Oporto etc, or Lisbon/Sintra etc or the Algarve?
One tip I can give you is to learn a bit of the language before you go, it is much appreciated by the locals.

Afallon - Not in the Algarve!!! They like to practice their English. When I was leaning Portuguese I found it really hard to get them to speak Portuguese down there. Different the further North you go though.

Maybe Porto, if you wish to visit a big, northern, coastal city. Otherwise Lisbon is good. However, if you and your wife are looking to relax more then maybe Madeira.
