I was in NY over the weekend and saw this turtle in a grassy field. You could see it had dug in a few different spots, but when we came upon it, the turtle was busy digging in another spot.
Just wondering if it was digging to lay its eggs.

Thank you.

Snappers will also travel extensively overland to reach new habitat or to lay eggs. Pollution, habitat destruction, food scarcity, overcrowding and other factors will drive snappers to move overland; it is quite common to find them travelling far from the nearest water source. Snapping turtles mate from April through November, with their peak laying season in June and July. The female can hold sperm for several seasons, utilizing it as necessary. Females travel over land to find sandy soil in which to lay their eggs, often some distance from the water. After digging a hole, the female typically deposits 25 to 80 eggs each year, guiding them into the nest with her hind feet and covering them with sand for incubation and protection. Incubation time is temperature-dependent, ranging from 9 to 18 weeks. In cooler climates, hatchlings overwinter in the nest.

HOLD ON.... BEFORE YOU TOUCH IT CHECK YOUR STATES LAWS ABOUT SNAPPERS... IN TEXAS ALLIGATOR SNAPPERS ARE ILLEGAL TO EVEN TOUCH WITHOUT A PERMIT. SO CHECK THAT BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANYTHING... ALSO... IF IT IS OK, YOU CAN TRY TO CANDLE THEM IF YOU MUST. BUT BE SURE TO PUT THE EGG BACK THE EXACT SAME WAY IT WAS. NOW MY ADVICE IS TO LET NATURE TAKE ITS COURSE. REPTILES LAY SO MANY EGGS BECAUSE OF THE MORTALITYT RATE OF THEIR SPECIES. ITS KINDA NATURES INSURANCE PLAN FOR KEEPING THEM ALIVE. I AM SURE THEY ARE FINE AS LONG AS THE TEMP REMAINED OK, ALTHOUGH IN REALITY IF THE TEMP DROPPED BELOW 75 DEGREES THEY ARE MOST LIKELY DEAD... ITS SAD BUT THATS LIFE... JUST BE HAPPY YOU GOT TO SEE THIS SITE OF A TURTLE NEST. I HAVE BEEN IN ANIMAL/REPTILE RESCUE FOR OVER 10 YEARS AND NEVER CAME ACORSS A WILD NESTING SITE.

Not positive, but I live in MN and all the snappers are laying right now- so I am sure it was probably laying eggs.
