im looking for a glue/cement that will bond rubber (from a bicycle inner tube) to steel.
it needs to make a nice airtight bond so i can pump air into somthing.
and it needs to be available in a normal UK hardware store.

Try a good contact cement and apply to both surfaces let it get tacky then put two surfaces together.
Do not put an exessive amount on the 2 sides as it only needs a thin coating.

I think the bond you are looking for would be Automotive weatherstrip adhesive. Available at any auto parts store. As for pumping air I doubt you could exceed a few pounds per square inch with any adhesive.

I'm not sure about the UK but here in the US, 3M makes something called weatherstrip cement. We affectionately refer to it as "Gorilla Snot". It comes in tubes or cans and is slimy and yellow, it dries quickly. Hence the nickname. We usually get it in hardware and automotive suppliers.

Many adhesives will do the job. Don't rely on the adhesive being air-tight though.
Not sure exactly what you're doing, but try a 2-part epoxy resin like Araldite. Be warned, it sets hard.

Aquaseal available from fishing tackle shops, not generally known about, follow the instructions on the tube, if you do it will seal just about anything.

I don't know if what you seek will be in a hardware store, but they should have something in an auto parts store, or perhaps a place that supplies auto body shops.

Cause that's the strongest glue you can find
Once you glue it, it's not comng off.

Araldite is mental sticky! Try this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Araldite-Precision-Syringe-Pack/dp/B0001OZH4E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/202-9194690-2612657?ie=UTF8&s=diytools&qid=1180962466&sr=8-3 it tells me it can be used on metals. It smells, and you have to mix it on something that you don't mind throwing away, but it does bond things really well.

we use bostick on an aeroplane door seal its metal but not steel but i shouldnt think that would matter.
