Shutting down your machine overnight saves power, but, there can be slight downsides.

Auto update for hotfixes / virus scans / etc. are usually configured for late night work, to avoid stressing the machine whilst you are using it.

Also, the main wear & tear on a machine kicks in at power up. Spinning up hard drives, fans, the warming up of your chipset, etc. Not major problems, but, more stressful than just running in standyby mode.

look at power management in the control panel & see if these options suit you better.

Hope this helps.

No harm, in fact shutting it down all the time can reduce the lifespan of your system.

If it's a power issue, then just employ some power saving functions.

The only other reason I could see you having to do this is if the PC is making a lot of noise or it's overheating. Both would point to a problem with your fan or cooling system.

The debate is still raging over restarting your computer VS just leaving it running. Some believe it causes excess wear-and-tear on your system to restart it every day. Some believe that running it 24x7 causes more stress. From an environmental perspective, you would save a couple bucks on your electricity bill if you shut it down every night. It will also cut down your chance of someone attempting to break into your computer.

Turn off your computer once a day if you can. This will save electricity. You can leave it one... that's a personal choice.

But run various maintenance programs during the night if you want to leave it on.

- anti-virus scans
- Check Disk - open My Computer, right click on the C drive and pick PROPERTIES, go to TOOLS, then click on CHECK NOW. Pick both tests then Restart the computer to let the full test run.
- Anti-spyware scans
- burn Backup CDs or DVDs
- Disk Cleanup - look for this in the System Tools section of Accessories.
- DEFRAG (after check disk was run recently)

So make your nights useful and start any of the maintenance programs.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

hey der.
well it may not be necessarily be extremely harmful i.e. will not cause meltdown of your motherboard over-time or any other rumors you might have heard like dose!

But I hope you are aware that the computer(or any other appliance for that matter) keeps drawing power from the wall socket as long as its plugged-in.
This way you might be at a greater risk of short circuit if something goes awry with your house fuse. So, it is always better to switch off all these "power-sucking" appliances by removing the plug out of the wall socket every night!

No, you don't have to shutdown, but to reduce the power consumption you may want to do it.

Also to increase your LCD screen life time you can shutdown the computer or in the power settings you can say after 5min of idle time turn off the screen, so your computer will be on but your screen will be turned off.

No, it won't harm your computer. Running it idle overnight wastes electricity and just contributes to greenhouse gases. Besides the PC was not designed to run without performing anything.
