The only thing I can think of is it fires up the team. It's not like the call can get reversed. It is entertaining though.

Most managers believe that if they argue with the umpire on a close call they will get the nod from the umpire on the next close call. Also, If they can get an umpire to consult with another umpire the call could be reversed. Managers sometimes argue just to support their player who is in the middle of it, and on that rare occasion a manager is wanting to get tossed just to pump up his team. With all that being said, they mostly do it out of frustration and nothing good becomes of it.

It pumps up the team when they see the Manager is backing them and gets thrown out. It can also save a player getting thrown out by the manager taking the heat from the ump.

Usually they go out there and are really mad( Lou Pinella) because the ump won't listen to them but there main goal is to have the umpires have a little" meeting and hopefully reverse the call.

I agree that it's a waste to get yourself thrown out and then not be there to make the important decisions to lead your team. People say it fires the team up. A manager should not have to sacrifice himself to fire professional ballplayers up.
