You didn't say if your son pees standing or sitting, but since most parents teach boys to stand, I am going to assume that's what you've done.

I have 2 boys (7 & 3), and it is not unusual for boys to take longer to train than girls. #1 was 3 yrs, 3 mos and #2 was 3 yrs 1 mos. Tried potty chairs, stickers, cheerios, character underwear, etc. - nothing worked but soft potty seats and lots of praise with occasional treat and big boy reminders.

1) Soft potty seats that fit on top the regular toilet seat work best because
a) it makes sitting down less scarier,
b) cleanup a lot easier and
c) makes the transition to the regular toilet much smoother.

2) Teach your boys to sit down and do their business, regardless if it's Number 1 or 2, because
a) sometimes they don't know they have to poop until they sit down, and
b) they need to be taught how to hold their penis down so they don't whiz all over the seat, the floor, the walls and you!!
c) sitting down takes more practice than standing up and whipping it out and letting loose!
d) and later, you'll be glad you taught them seat etiquette at an early age (ie, wiping seat down if any pee gets on it, put the lid down after use)

DON'T RESORT TO PULLUPS: Neither of my boys wore/wear pullups during the day or night because I believe they only prolong the diaper mentality. Either they wear diapers or skivvies, and they eventually chose skivvies. So think twice about buying pullups because the diaper companies WANT you to keep spending money on their products when it usually isn't necessary.

Remember that you will have little victories here and there, but when they're ready, they're ready, and it will be all of a sudden and they won't turn back. All you need to do is be strong because your little baby is suddenly a big boy!

my son was the same... all u can do is persevere, and keep calm about the whole thing. if u get anxious infront of him, he'll dig his heels in even further over using the big toilet to poo in.

try getting (or making) a reward sticker chart. every time he goes to the big toilet, give him a sticker. even if it's just for pees. kids that age love stickers. it worked with my son. he liked showing everyone his chart, and how many stickers he'd got. u could even get big stickers and little stickers, and tell him that the big stickers are special ones that he only gets if he uses the big toilet when he needs to poo...

i also found that my son didn't like being watched by anyone when he needed to poo - which is why he used to wait til night time, and poo in his night time nappies. try letting him have as much privacy as possible when he needs to go.

and lastly, try not to worry. your son is by no means the only one to do this - i've known several kids (particularly boys, for some reason) who've gone through this phase. it does get better, and then u'll look back on it all and wonder why u got so worried ! (lol - i know i did !)

good luck !

As a mother of 3 (now all young adults) I hope to offer the following advice. Is your little boy wearing a nappy or just cotton pants? I would seriously advise against the nappy because it is just too convenient for him. He is used to it and has been doing a poo in a nappy all his life. Be sure he knows he is a big boy now and old enough to wear what we called "training pants" They are a little thicker than normal undies but still look and feel like cotton pants. He can get them off quickly to use the toilet, but they become heavy and "lumpy" and very uncomfortable with a poo inside.
Another tought. Is he afraid to sit on the toilet? It may seem so big for a little person to perch comfortable on to get the job done. Some kids are terrified of falling in and just refuse to sit on an adult sized toilet seat! There are seats available for toddlers that fit onto the toilet seat and make a smaller hole for his little bottom so he won't fall in.
I know it sounds gross, but I used read to my children while they sat on the toilet. It made the experience of being there more comfortable for them. We now call it "the Library". lol
And lastly. Remember to praise him for every time he uses the toilet. It is a huge achievement for him.
I hope this helps. Good luck to you both.

I had the same problem with my daughter many years ago. I made a chart and stuck it on the wall next to the loo, every time she had a poo in the toilet she got a gold star. I told her if she could get 2 weeks' of gold stars I would buy her the toy she had wanted for ages (it was a singing Barney thing - big mistake lol). Within a week she always used the loo

My daughter is almost the same age as your son, i have been potty training her for about 2months now. Although she will let me know when she wants a wee, she too will just poo in her knickers. I mentioned this to my Health Visitor who said that all children take a lot longer to know when they want a poo. I guess we just have to be a bit more patient. Good luck.

this problem is quite common especially with boys more so than girls, just hang in there it will all click into place with him soon once he is a bit more confident.
try and get him to use the potty for a number 2 and the big toilet for no 1's see if that helps.
good luck

Some children dont like the splash when they poo in the toilet. See if he will go in his potty or try putting paper in the toilet to soften the sound for him. god luck
