You do not need a router. Your wireless device in your laptop is enough. Just make sure your Windows Firewall is ON and click a check mark on the box for "Don't Allow Exceptions". That should be enough to harden your PC from intruders/snoopers.

Wireless Router will not work in long ranges... U need to register for WiFi internet connection so that u can search for hotspots (Place u can get wifi signal) thereby u can access internet.

If u wanna buy wireless router and wanna setup a home wireless network u can very well do that. The encryption schemes are available in Vista and XP. U can specify while creating a nework (U can choose WEP,Wired equivalent privacy, or open autentication) and the same encryption scheme shud be used by the person connectin to ur network. Security is ensured with the help of passkey (passwords)

Good question. How to secure you're wireless connection when traveling? Suggestions (1) Get a decent firewall and set to highest level of internet security, look up ZoneAlarm (2) Antivirus of course. Over and above that I would strongly recommend getting a whole of disk encryption product from either PGP or Pointsec. When traveling the biggest risk is laptop loss and theft. If your data is encrypted you've only lost the laptop.

It' impossible to use a wireless router for your situation . What you need is a wireless card which will probably run you about $40 bucks a month legitamently. Btw Verizon has it.

if u want to access the net from your travels, the router just wont cut it, thats for local networks, usually max of 100m

So u will have to (depending on where u live) get a certain wireless internet card
