the easiest thing to do is to start with yourself then work back as far as you can by asking your parents then your grandparents and any other relative who would answer any questions you may have such as dates and locations of births and deaths. Once you reach a point where no one is able to assist you then you can go to the library to research before the census of 1930. You can also research websites such as www.rootsweb.com , www.familysearch.org, and www.ancestry.com. Depending on how far back you want to will determine the extent of your research. The research never ends though and it is a lifelong pursuit that never ends because each person you find leads you to another branch of your family tree. For example you can research your father's lineage many generations but then you have your mother's and it keeps going. It is very interesting how we reached where we are today and it all ties in to the historical events and migration patterns of our ancestors. Good luck in your search, I am sure you will have fun.

Go to your parents and find out everything they know about who was born when and marriage dates. This would include you, any siblings, themselves and if you want, their brothers and sisters. Next step is the grandparents. Same info except you will need to get the information about their parents also and the date they passes away, if they have and where they are buried.

If you have great grandparents go to them and get information also. Great aunts and uncles also. Much info will be lost when the older generations pass on if it isn't recorded now.

You will first need to get as much information about your parents, grandparents, etc. as you can from talking to them, because you can typically only search for dead people on the Internet. Once you have some information farther back in your family, here are a few resources for you to use:

http://www.familysearch.org

Probably the best free online resource.

http://www.ancestry.com is one of the best for military records in particular but has a hefty subscription fee.

Also, you can check the surname message boards for his surname at:

http://genforum.genealogy.com

For links to helpful sites, you will want to take a look at:

http://www.cyndislist.com

And finally for a lot of different resources:

http://www.rootsweb.com

Good luck,
Dave

Contact your local public library. What I've found is that many public libraries offer lots of free help and information for people who are starting genealogy searches.

Good luck!
