I need to work out some maths for a game of marbles ...... you start with a pile (n) of marbles and a legal move is between 1 & n/2. Now I need to work out how to make a "random" move that leaves the pile with a value that is a power of 2 minus 1 (that is also a legal move). Any suggestions, I have been working on it for hours........

That's just a variant of the old Chinese game of 'Nim'. Look it up on the web.

First thing you need to do is state your problem clearly. I haven't got the foggiest idea what you're trying to figure out. If you don't either, no wonder you can't solve it.
