We cannot drop ego... we simply have to dissolve it and merge it with the bigger I, the I of supreme whole... God Almighty himself! This is only possible when we transcend the five senses and the mind. Taking control of the five senses and the mind is a tough job yet, not impossible! Mahavira did it so did Gautama Buddha. Followed them Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed. In the last about 150 years... Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana did it!

When I started in search of God 13 years of age... I had absolutely no idea where I was heading! I started my journey remaining absolutely truthful to all... no matter what! As time passed by slowly but patiently I started overcoming the obstacles of the senses and the mind. Initially I had to take control of the five senses. I tried the best I could... 25 years ahead... at 37 years of age I finally realized God.

The moment I gained absolute control over the five senses... control over mind power became easier. Now only those thoughts entered my brain that I desired. I had reached the level of Nirvikalpa Samadhi. I can now have communion with God on one-to-one basis permanently. While establishing control over the senses, practicing absolute celibacy for a minimum period of 12 years is an essential must.

Neti (not this, not this) the path preached and advocated by Maharishi Ramana is a sure shot method of reaching God at the earliest. Cutting across the shackles of Prarabdha karma is the most difficult task one ever faces on the spiritual path. None knows the mantra for cutting across Prarabdha karma! The day I realized the mantra... it was all over! A few days later I gained self realization.

Amongst all the experiences... the stage of Nirvikalpa Samadhi is phenomenal. The experience is beyond the comprehension of words. It can never be explained! Nishakama karma finally paves way for taking control of the five senses and the mind. When we realize that nothing belongs to us and the offerings are meant for our soul atman within... the ego slowly melts. More on Ego Aham - http://www.godrealized.com/aham_ego.html

It is not impossible to drop ego. Just try this. Stop thinking only about yourself and understand the feelings of other people by stepping into their shoes.
Learn to be compassionate and make some sacrifices and compromises. Then iam sure one day you will find that your "ego" nowhere exists.
Whereever there is selfishness there exists ego.

Until men are content being cogs in the machine (btw: they're not) then they will never drop their ego. We thrive when every single person in a society is pursuing his own rational self-interest.

Remember what Adam Smith said:

"It is not by the benevolence of the butcher, the baker, and the brewer that we get our supper, but through their own regards for their own self-interest."

For a philosopher to say "surrender your ego" would be like going to a job and the boss being like this: "You're not important. The company does not care about you. You are a cog in the machine, here to sacrifice yourself for us. You will never get a raise, never get a promotion. You will do what you are doing until we tell you to stop."

Doesn't sound like a very pleasant place to work, ehh? Well, that would be an example of a company that wants its workers to surrender their egos

The 'ego' is the mind, the consciousness, the soul, the spirit of man, the essence of the word "I." Death is the only way to fully drop the ego.

Plato originated this 'ideal' - Altruism - and thousands of 'philosophies' agree, including all religeons; they would all have you give up the 'evil' of ego which means essentially don't think, just obey; faith/subjectivity v's reason/objectivity.

The choice is yours.

Have you ever thought where does it come from. This is as simple as ABCD and you need to be rocket scientist to understand that. It comes from your inside.....the depth of your thoughts. The time when the sense of superiority comes to your mind, you start growing egostic. So don't ever think that you the best or the most perfect. Move out of your home and try to find a thing in this world which is perfect.

friend,

You repeated the question, in my view.when you drop ''I'' ,the EGO is`also dropped.

this can be done , as elders say and scripture declare,by serious introspection.....by thinking about yourself and go on analysing.go on asking who is seeing when you see a thing.similarly who tastes?who makes you experience the dream and tell you about it?who is that that wakes you up in the morning?what is that that says after you had a good sleep, that you had a nice undisturbed sleep?
You say this is my hand,my leg,my eyes,my nose,my this ...my that...who is this MY?

go on thinking..gradually you will shed the ignorance blankets one by one and arrive at the truth finally,as elders say.

Don't have to drop the "I", just have to change it a bit...them,you and "I".

Ego is difficult to surrender but it is not difficult to control.
Ego alone is impossible to get rid of. But Care,friendship,self-discovery,knowledge and humility along with it makes it easier to change "EGO" to "self-respect".

sometimes its good to sit by yourself all alone and analyse your own actions, this helps a lot.

It is impossible to completely lose one's sense of "I" or "me" because that is what we understand everything around us through. If we are stating a sentance truthfully we cannot say "The grass is green" but "I see that grass as green" or "I perceive that grass to be green". Our minds are limited to what our selves can sense and we are therefore incapable of moving beyond the basicness of our "selves".

That is not to say that we cannot cease to be selfish or egotistical, simply that we cannot erase the "I" or "self" entirely.

I agree with you, as long as we are alive, it is not possible to drop ego. However, it may be possible to keep it in check through deliberate neutralizing strategy.................. one such plan I am trying to use.... remind ourselves every now and then how small and minuscule we are in relation to this huge Universe unfolding over the vast time-span... we are but a speck.... ego wouldn't easily leave us, but its activity level can be gradually reduced..... of course easier said than can be successfully implemented... I can't claim success yet.
