I assume you mean the story of the "Birds and the Bees" as told to youngsters enquiring about Sex!
I have always thought it strange that these animals should be chosen since you probaby see cows doing "it" more often or even dogs. The simple answer is that it is a convenient illustration that lends itself to introducing reproduction to young children. It has nothing at all to do with human reproduction other than making a statement about sex.

I will add to what labsci says.

Religions make us squeamish talking frankly about sex. It is suppose to be kept hidden and not talked about even though it is a most natural part of life. Then, labsci says it will traumatize children to tell the truth. That's true only if the children have already been trained to think sex is bad, dirty, and naughty.

Sooooo.... birds and bees substitute for frankly speaking and admitting humans reproduce in the same way animals do.

Umm...
The basics are the same?

If parents had to describe sex in the context that "this is what Mum and Dad do with each other", it will traumatise the child and probably put him/her off reproduction for life.
It's probably safest talking about animals.
