There may be several possibilities that caused your computer to crash (also known as Blue Screen of Death):

Your computer may be infected with malware or spyware corrupted files that may cause it to crash. If you can get into safe mode, try do the virus scan, once you find files infected, try to delete them. You may also try to do system restore in safe mode to last known good configurations.

Try to think of anything that was not a problem before it came to this point. Any new software that was installed? New hardware installed? Those may be the factor of corrupted files.

You can try putting windows XP disc in cd rom drive, restart your computer, it should give you an option to "repair" your XP OS.

Try Booting to Safe Mode and if it doesn't boot to Safe Mode, Reformat the Computer.

Your OS seems to be corrupted. Try a repair w/ this:

Then when you boot, go to safe mode and scan for virus.

Worked for me 3X in different PCs and w/ one of our peers here.

Reformat is only a last resort and for the desperate.
