My best friend of 12 years is having a baby, what are some unique but appropriate gifts for her and the baby? I don't want to out-do her two sisters gift but i want something really unusual but practical and unique.

One of the nicest thing I received from a friend when my baby was born was a baby record book. He was the only person to buy me one of these and I have filled in every detail so far. You can get all sorts with all different characters. Mine is Beatrix Potter, but you can get Winnie the Pooh etc.
Also, why not but a gift for your friend? After all she's the one that is carrying this baby and going through all that pain!! Just something simple like a spa set or perfume, something she can use on herself. New mums are always forgotten about!

Make up a basin of useful little things. That's what I always do. I get a plastic tub, not too big, I put in some diapers, a cute outfit, a rattle, a baby book or two. To fill empty spaces I open up a package of baby socks and stick them around throughout the whole thing. Also, get some bigger sizes of onesies and sleepers since most new parents get a lot of newborn sizes, but they'll also need the 3 - 6 month stuff and 6 - 9 month stuff. Stick in a pretty photo album and wrap it all up with cellophane and a pretty ribbon.

How about a diaper cake. They are quite unusual and beautiful, but also designed to be entirely practical - you can get a 4-tier diaper cake from this site that is made from 110 diapers, and has wipes, baby powder, changing pads, vaseline, desitin, and other baby changing supplies hidden inside. Have a look!

This is the most practical, unique, and unusual baby gift I know of!

get a sling for her - a lot of people don't consider them essential, but I don't know what I would have done without mine - and I still use it every day now baby is one.

Basically it's a really versatile sling that can hold a baby in a few diferent ways - right from newborn. It's good because you can get around and do stuff and have baby right by you, baby has their own little space - so feels safe wherever you are, you can go out to dinner with a newborn in the sling and they sleep right through. Also good for breastfeeding in public, and a really good way to calm a screaming baby by taking a little walk with the sling.

These ones come in lots of nice colours, and Dad can wear them too (if you don't get the pink one!)

When my youngest child was born, a family member of my hubby hand made a blanket for our little one. It had her name and birthday on it. That was the most precious thing that I have ever seen. Thank goodness she did it after the baby was born..... She was supposed to be a HE!!!!

But, if you cannot sew, the baby book is a great idea! You can buy one of those scrapbook kits and make your own with it! That would be unique. A friend of mine did that for me and I cherish it dearly.

I buy a decorative boxes at a local craft store and customize for the baby and fill it with baby products that my company carries. Just gave one away this weekend; it's personal, yet practical. I include all the essentials, shampoo, body wash, diaper cream... even a cream for mom. And I throw in a baby teething toy. I've sold these baby care sets to a couple of friends. New moms love them!

I don´t know if its unique, but for practical nothing beats these "entertainment centers" for babies. They´re static, so you don´t have to worry about baby rolling around and grabbing things you dont want, and they keep them entertained for hours if need be. Also, they´re safe for you to leave the child there if you need to get things done say in the kitchen and baby fusses if you leave him in his crib. He´ll be able to use it from about 5 or six months old until well over a year old. They sell them at infanti or graco stores, and i´m sure others too.

My little boy was just baptized in March and my aunt and uncle gave him a really cool book called "Give Me Grace" by Cynthia Rylant, my aunt said they got it at Barnes and Nobles. It is a hardboard book that has a prayer for each day of the week with really neat illustrations. It is a really beautiful book. They wrote him a personal message on the inside cover too.

Do a belly cast with your friend. It will be a bonding experience for both of you and she will have a keepsake she can keep forever.

All you need is *Ready Wrap* and Vaseline to start. The whole process takes about 1/2 hr and dries super fast.
