I have an 98 chevy metro and I want to paint it really cheap. I am not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on it to get it painted because that would be more than the car is probably worth. I have a air compressor, air hose, sanders, garage. The paint is not that bad on it. It is burgandy and I want it bright yellow. I know it will not look real good because I am not a professional. I am wondering if any of you can tell me the steps in order to paint it myself? Nobody in my family or friends will tell me because I'm a woman they think I can't do it. Also it has a rust hole under the door. How do I fix that? I know bondo. What exactly are the steps I have to take to get it fixed? Another reason for painting is the door is a shade darker because I changed it. Thanks for your answers.

You may be suprised at how much painting it yourself costs compared to having it painted somewhere. If you do all the prep work yourself you may find someone who will just squirt the paint for you. It's pretty complicated to thin the paint correctly then the clear coat is horrible to breathe, even with a decent respirator. The other problem is dust and ventilation. You need to wet down the floor of your garage so no dust kicks up. Depending on the size of that hole in the door you might want to fiberglass it and remove/kill the rust. Probably want to take the door off to do that. Seriously though, check into the basic Maaco or Earl Scheib services, it isn't going to cost you much more than doing it yourself. Good Luck!

First off, I urge you NOT to try to paint your car!!!! Chances are you will do a terrible job, and it will never look right again. If you still want to do it, then at least go to a junkyard and buy an old hood or door from a car and practice. First you will need to scuff the paint up with a fine sandpaper st the new pain and primer will have something to adhere to.
After that is done, get the floor of your garage wet ( to help prevent dust from getting kicked up) and close the doors. Use long steady sweeping motions that overlap one another to apply your fist coat. Then you should look for runs in the paint. If this is your first time painting a car, there WILL be runs in the paint. After you can get a clean, even cover email me back and I will tell you how to mask the car off properly.

I hope your expectations are low. Maaco can give you a paint job for about $200-$300.00.

But, if you really want to do it yourself:

First you have to cut away the rust around the hole. Clean the metal back an 1.5 to 2 inches around the hole of paint. Buy a fiberglass patch to cover the hole and adhere it to the surface according to the directions. Fill the patch with bondo. Sand to smooth with various grades of wet/dry sandpaper. Sand various roadchips and dings in the car's surface. Fill with bondo, sand to smooth. Sand all areas of the car where the paint is still glossy. Cover wheels, windows, light fistures, chrome and anything you don't want painted with paper made for the purpose and tape. Spray paint the car with primer. Sand to smooth. Repaint with primer. Sand to smooth. Paint with color you pick. Sand to smooth. Repaint with color. Sand to smooth with very fine grit wet/dry. Paint with clear coat.
