Why would ones menstrual cycle suddenly shorten. Mine has been a week shorter than usual for the last couple of months. I am usually quite regular and was just wondering what might cause this. I'm 19 btw.

Many things effect your hormones which in turn effect your menstral cycle. Women's cycles don't become extremely consistant until they are in their mid 20s. First, I would say it's probably just your age. Secondly, excercise, lack of excercise, stress levels, vitamins, sexual activity, emotions...everything you do or eat has an effect on your biochemistry and your hormones. Question your schedule 2nd...when you period changed was it at a time when you started a new workout routine. Did you do something that made you stressed or was stress relieving...etc? Third, The people that are around you can effect your menstral cycle. Have you been around (on a very regular basis) different women whose cycle could have effected yours?

As long as you are having regular, non painful, appropriate length periods then it is probably due to a change in your biochemistry and hormones.

If you experience pain, changes in your skin, signifigantly lighter or heavier periods, or if your cycle changes again then you might want to see a doctor.

However, it is very mature of you to keep track of your menses at 19. Most women don't pay attention to that until they are trying to get pregnant, or think they might accidentally be pregnant.

If you started your period , lets say at 16 , it might go irregular . Usually if you have just got it , it it takes at least 2-3 years to get it on a regular basis.
I got my when I was really young and it used to be heavy. Now , it lasts 3 days and sometimes 4. So it just has to get into the way your body works. Your ok.

I don't why it happens, but it happens to me. I'm regular for a looooooong time and then suddenly it shortens for a few months and then goes back to normal.

this could be caused by a change in lifestyle for example more or less stress or different day to day activities

Could be the McClintock effect - where women who are close sometimes find their periods synchronising.
