The best thing to do is lightly sand (with sandpaper thats more on the fine than rough side) the fridge - just by hand, as the finish on it is more than likley enamel, you need to sand off the shine/sheen, then see how the paint goes.

To assure the paint stays on you want to clean and degloss the fridge real well-degloss with sandpaper or better yet a chemical deglosser that you wipe on with a rag saturated with the stuff-it actually softens the paint so the top coat will adhere

Now most chalkboard paints that I am familiar with(Crayola,Benjamin Moore)are ACRYLIC-water based
I would prime the metal surface with an alkyd primer such as Kilz to assure adhesion as children might be writing on it,lol but that just my opinion as if you were paying me and I had to guarantee it---you might be alright without the primer if you chemically degloss the metal surface.

I've painted more then several appliances in older apartment for tenants. You can get appliance paint in the spray can from Home Depot.
