It depends on the breed as both occur. Mollies, platys, swords etc. are live bearers but daninos, tigerbarbs, fighters etc. are egg layers.

depends on the fish, some are livebearers, some lay eggs. There is a wide variety of fish that do either so it isnt exactly easy to say which does which without getting into a very LONG post.

No, it's not true that only mammals give live birth, there are are few snake species that give live births.
Search the web for the type of fish you have.
If yours does have live births you should get nesting seperations......that way the other fish won't bother them.

There really should be a 3rd category though: mouthbrooders. They put the eggs in their mouth and don't release them until the fry hatch.
