My husband and I currently own a townhouse and are looking for something bigger. For the price we can afford, we can either get a bigger, nicer townhouse or a decent home (ranch) that does need a lot of updating (ie there's ugly wallpaper in every room!!!). We really want our own single family home with fenced in yard.. but all that work that has to be done is kind of a turn off. What do you think is a better move? Another townhouse or go for the single family?

I think you should stay where you are for a while and save your money. Later, you may find a single family home to your liking. I bought a fixer-upper 18 years ago. I am still fixing things. When you are a homeowner, the maintenance and remodeling never seems to end, no matter where you live.

There was ugly wallpaper in every room in my home. It was installed without priming the drywall and without using sizing. I have contractors and relatives who are still swearing about getting the old paper off.

When you don't have remodeling to do, you have free time to enjoy yourselves.

go for the house, unless it's unsafe for you and the family. you don't want neighbors, and wallpaper can be changed.
