Lots of people have mentioned that they thought the money donated to help find Maddy, would have been used to fund a private investigator.

How do you know that this isnt the case, surely this would be secret to protect the investigation and investigator.

Just a thought!

Gurney - On the missing persons website, the majority of missing children have been abducted by a parent, whilst this is awful for the other parent, they are mostly alive and well. In this country, there are very few children who are abducted by strangers and missing for this amount of time. When Holly and Jessica were missing, it was on the news 24/7 as it should have been.

RM - can see your point, but as the case stands now, its likely that a PI has been bought in, and its probably the last thing that would be revealed to the press. I think he had to keep the Portugese police on his side by praising them, I think they were too slow to inform the borders that an abduction had taken place.

There are some thoroughly unpleasant sentiments being aired over this issue by people with a lot more self-righteousness than self-awareness in their hearts.

I am reminded of the revolting spectacle around the death of Princess Diana when people began to regard themselves as her "defenders" against the rest of the royal family - all without any real knowledge of any of the individuals, relationships or any other pertinent facts to interfere with their tabloid notions. I see a similar phenomenon on a smaller scale here as people scrutinise the McCann's conduct and demeanour looking for, and naturally not finding, the "right" expressions of emotion or the "right" way of conducting themselves.

I think I have a fairly normal measure of understanding of my fellow humans - perhaps slightly more than average because of my occupation (a health/social work type job involving working closely with people) - and I see nothing sinister or unusual in anything the McCanns have said or done since the start of this dreadful saga. Their behaviour throughout has seemed to me to be just what it is on the surface - the outward expression of a family facing a nightmare but determined to survive it and do all in their power to bring about the return of their beloved child.

I think those on this site and others who see anything less wholesome than this are seeing only what is in their own hearts, not what is in the McCanns.

Very good point, but I don't see it being the case because every move they make is in the papers, so the kidnappers are going to be one step ahead anyway; we're going on 5 weeks now and not a sign of them anywhere...
I don't agree with all the media coverage for the same reason. I have said before that I think they shouldn't give a running commentary on everything they're doing, just use the donations to pay 2 or 3 reputable papers (if such an animal exists!) to print Madeleine's photo on the front page everyday with the simple caption "Madeleine Still Missing, No New Leads". We all know the papers are only in it for the money, so they're not going to care how they get that money, are they? (The proof of that being in some of the stories that they print). This would keep Madeleine in the public eye, but wouldn't tell the kidnappers anything.

Well the McCanns did say themselves that they were not bringing in Private Investigators. How come PI;s would not be mentioned in this particular case? To many people are being quiet is my thought. The friends they were out with, the resort managment. If this is such a safe place where abductions are rare then that would just lead me to believe although the more that it is an inside thing. I do however believe the mother is truely grieving and a mess. I believe she fears her husband is controlled by him. I believe she does not want to fly off and leave her other 2 children but he makes her. Why cannot 1 parent take care of the publicity matters? He is controlling every move she makes and is not letting her out of his site because I think he fears she will finally crack and let out some very important info. Why did the story keep changing as far as who checked them and how often?

The McCanns were criticising the Portuguese police on the second day following Madeleine's disappearance. Notably the sister, Philomena, who claimed to be reporting what Gerry and Kate were feeling.
Next came the Limited Company, (the website was registered one week after her disappearance) and when the fund was at about £300,000 Gerry McCann said in one of the press conferences that he (suddenly) had great faith in the police, and there was no need to hire private investigators.
So while I'd love to think you're right, I really doubt you are.

Edit: The fund balance as of today is now £618,650.

a valid thought.

it seems to me that lots of people 'get off' on hating the McCanns based solely on their own preconceptions and prejudices mixed in with the (very little) information that they see in the media.

There are a lot of things going on in the investigation which have not yet been released. there are a lot of things going on with the McCanns 24 hours a day.

Some people are judging them based on a couple of 30 second interviews and a 1/2 column in the daily mail.
people like that make me sick

edit - to Gurney.
before Madeleine McCann was snatched, did you notice a lot of media attention focused on missing children? Yes/No?

If Madeleine McCann had NOT been Snatched, do you think there CURRENTLY would be a lot of media attention focused on other missing children? Yes/No?

Had you even thought about the number of children who are missing/snatched before last month? Yes/No?

If you answered NO to any of these questions then your answer is rubbish

It is possible... but the truth about this will eventually come out..

With the amount of support I am sure all secret agencies are on the case...and interpol....

With the amount of public involvement there should be a public inquiry into the case...assessing all parties

When the media focuses so much of their time and attention on one missing child, it takes away from others who are also missing. What makes one more important than another? People should donate their efforts and money to a broader program.
