I'll be selling my car because im moving and I'm afraid I'm going to have a hard time selling my car because the check engine light is on. It's been on for several months but the car runs great. I've researched and it seems that many old and even newer corollas have problems with the check engine light always turning on even if the car runs fine and even after its been checked and diagnosed. Any suggestions on how to turn it off?

The only sure way to get it off for good is to have the error code read out and tracked down to what's causing it. The reason is that even if you disconnect one of your battery cables and get rid of the light for awhile, if there's a true problem, the error will reoccur. Even though the car runs fine, that doesn't mean there isn't something wrong with the car, and if I were buying the car, not knowing what might be wrong with your car would worry me, especially since you've been driving it that way for months. Of course you worry how much it will cost to fix it. But you can bring the car to a Toyota Dealer and at least find out what the error codes mean without having to pay a lot of money. Then you might find out that the problem is not expensive to fix or at least you can show a car buyer the receipt from the Toyota Dealer on what has to be fixed. If you have an AutoZone auto parts store near you, they will read out the error codes for free and you can ask another question on Answers what those codes mean.

On a older corolla, the check engine sign usually has to do with the Fuels/oxygen Sensor. Replacing them will fix this problem. If you want a temporary fix, go to Orelys or Autozone since they can dignose and in some cases remove the check engine sign for up to 100 miles.

bring it to a toyota dealer or garage and ask them to check it with their Toyota scanners. These lights come on because either some component in the car is not functioning properly or just because the time for a servicing has come. The garage will be able to tell you what is wrong with your car.

Check to make sure the gas cap is on tight, also if the catalytic converter is dirty or worn out it needs to be cleaned or replaced.
