I think that assisted suicide should be legal. There should be guidelines of course, such as agreement with other medical professionals that there is no hope for the person. These patients should be able to die with dignity, without long drawn out hospital stays and treatments that won't do anything more than delay the inevitable. Quality of life is not being hooked up to life support. Personally I wouldn't want that, nor would I want my sons to go through the pain of watching me die before their eyes. Then there are the financial cost involved. That is an added burden to people who are dealing with something like this.

If it were legal for Dr. Kavorkian to assist people in their suicides and there were an administrative body determining which ones were necessary, it would be humane. Since there is no structure in place, he had no right to assist anyone in suicide. He violated the law and his own professional ethics. I don't feel sorry for him at all. Doctors are required to make tough choices all the time. He displayed that he is not capable of making good decisions. That's why I suspect he should never have had the authority that goes along with being a doctor.
To answer your other question, I think 1- Inevitability of death and 2- Level of pain should be factors in determining who is eligible for assisted suicide, were it legal.

Ok first of I need to say if someone you know is telling you they are going to commit suicide then do something and get them help. I dont think people should be allowed to kill themselves but here is my issue.....
If a woman has a choice to have an abortion because it is her body then why can someone not have the right to choose whether they live or die, starve themselves, fill their bodies with drugs and alcohol etc. It is their body and they should have the choice. Do you see my point.
It is a shame people have to suffer but God is the only one who should decide when a life is taken.

Isn't it basically the same thing as "pulling the plug?" That's legal, right? I think that each person should be able to decide what they want to do with their own life. That's why it's their life. However, if they are unable to make that choice (ie coma), I think they should be left alive.

I am against any form of assisted suicide. The reasons: I don't want anyone deciding for me or my family when they should die or have their life continued.
I don't think we should legally sanction any form of suicide because that sends the wrong message to those who are depressive or have anxiety issues.

I'm not really qualified to say either way. I'm lucky enough never to have a relative or loved one in such close proximity to death. If they were, and they asked me to end their pain, I think I would
