Their key influences in many civil cases is they send a clear message that some illegal, unethical, or malpractice is not going to be tolerated. It is a reality check for some CEO's who think they can get away with murder!

One Love Canal is enough, though we have had thousands dumping toxic chemicals in our drinking water, and others just plain screwing people! They still haven't stopped!

When real people decide the facts in court cases, that limits the ability of the government (originally, the king) to dictate results. It is a check on the power of the government.
