How many missing children in the UK?

Over the last 10 years I could probably count on two hands how many children in the UK have been abducted and murdered, or not found, springing to mind is poor little Jamie Bulger, and the tragic case of Jessica and Holly. There was a little boy age 7 I think who disappeared from Becton in East London, he was never found and there have been other children....thankfully in this country children are not abducted and murdered that often so that it does not make the news.

The majority of missing children (ive took a look on the missing persons website) have been taken by a parent, now I know for the other parent left behind, these children are missing, and the pain must be horrific. But, they are mostly alive and well.

So, its unlikely that these missing children would get the sort of media attention as a missing child abducted by a stranger.
If Ben Needham had disappeared now instead of 1991 he would have been all over the internet as well.

People keep mentioning all the other missing children and how they deserve the same amount of press coverage, dont get me wrong, i agree that should have. but just how many children are missing, ones that have been abducted by strangers?

Greeny, at no point did I say that this case deserved it more, of course not. At no point did I say there were no murders or paedophiles, I also dont mean to berate you but perhaps go back and read what I put. If you go on the Missing persons website, there are hardly any children on there who have been abducted by a stranger in the UK. When ever a child in the UK is abducted by a stranger it makes big news, as it should. I dont know why you thought that the world would be a better place if Maddy were found......I am a realist and not at all naive.

RM - 2002 2003 results show that 60+ children were abducted by strangers, thats awful, but I had checked this site ages ago, and although that amount were abducted they were returned or found alive.

It clearly states on that site that since the death of little Sarah Payne very few children have been abducted and murdered thank god.

i totally agree about the ben needham thing if that was to happen now it would be exactly the same as the coverage madeleine is getting the fact is it is a different time now to when ben disappeared and there are a lot more sources of information and media than there where then

That's the point that people are trying to make when objecting to the McCann case. It shows that the media doesn't deal in an even fashion with everyone, and while some get elevated status, others (less blameworthy) will get slated.

Edit: Just to be clear, there were 68 children in 2002/2003 who were successfully abducted by strangers.... so make no mistake, it DOES happen, you just don't get to hear about it, and it's not splashed all over the newspapers - AND THAT'S THE POINT!!! Now maybe you see why people say that if Madeleine wasn't white and middle class, she wouldn't be getting this attention either.

It's an interesting point that you are trying to make. True there are reasons why not all cases are publicised as much as Maddies but then again I think that you are being a little naive in thinking that she is the only child who deserves it. If what you are saying is true then you are telling us that there are no child murders? There are no peodophiles? The world is a safe place if Maddy could just be found. I'm not going to berate you for your opinion as it seems better thought out then a lot of the McCann supporters comments recently. I'm not sure I'll agree with you at any point soon though.

Very good question. But are we sure that the McCanns have not been proven to not be involved somehow? I have not heard any news thus far that the police have ruled out the parents or even considered them suspects. Maybe they do it differently in other countries but usually within days of a missing child being reported the police will say the parents are not involved at all. Have these parents even been given a lie detector test? In the US I believe it is standard immediately for the family members to be questioned and given a lie detetector. How do we know that the parents were not somehow involved? If there is a news article or news video that shows this was shown that they didnt have any involvement besides the fact they left her to be kidnapped I would love the link. Seems all the lieing in the beginning would have led police to investigate the parents especially considering they were in a country with a low kidnapping rate. Like dad said himself. Million to one statistic that she would be kidnapped on holiday at this resort so maybe she was not kidnapped at all.

You are right. I've been saying this all along. It is why,when a child goes missing, it does make the news.
Most chldren run away from home, or are stolen by parents in a custodial battle.
And the news often dies down as soon as the child is found (liek the little girl in the bath) or a body is recovered.

Many, all over the world. I must add that its up the parents & family & friends to ensure media coverage in an attempt to get their children back. My thoughts exactly, about little Ben Needham...if his Mum had internet to help her in 1991, am sure she would have used it in her search. So why flak the McCanns for their coverage & say that the media is ignoring other children??? If the McCanns hadn't to have gone to the media in the way they you & i wouldn't be discussing Madeleine's disappearance the way we do.
