My shower pipe burst and the water has wet the drywall. Someone told me it will be fine once the drywall dries up but, how do I know for sure? The person who told me this is not an expert. How do I know if I need to replace the drywall or not?

I would replace the drywall, drywall, once soaked is a breeding ground for mold.

Leave the drywall dry out, see how bad it is, if it's hard and is not falling apart, leave it. It may need repainting.

If it's dry, don't worry about mold.

The wall behind the paint is a "green board" and made to withstand a certain amount of water due to being in the bath, it should hold up O.K. unless it's literally soaked in water and left wet all the time.

You don't know unless you take plaster off and look. Your house insurance may cover the cost of any damage that has occured - only if it has occured from the pipe (behind the plaster) not the actual tap connection. This happened to my parents, with a bit of negotiation between the repair man and the insurance company, they ended up with a nice bathroom renovation. It's worth ringing your insurance agent and finding out. I'm from Australia, it may be different in other countries.

You probably need a plumbing repair, unless the moisture was caused by a spill. I've never seen a pipe repair itself. You should replace the dry wall at the same time.
