When I split up with my ex, we lived in Manchester and I'd devoted my entire life to him. So I found myself away from home, and had aliennated most of my friends in the five years we were together. I moved back to London and when I started a new job I made sure to involve myself in any social gathering that was going on. Made the first move to ask people to lunch and soon my social circle was growing. Then I started actually talking to people in clubs, swapping numbers, keeping in touch and really investing my time into others. Two years down the line and I have a large circle of friends and a handful of really close friends that I know are going to be in my life always. I know how much I value them, and I know how much everyone likes me (not being bigheaded) and it makes me feel so good that I have such amazing friends and that they are there for me. I've been very lucky to meet these people... But as someone said to me, they feel just as lucky to have met me.

So my advice is to get out, start forcing yourself to interact with people and make sure you invest time and effort into them. Always be genuine.

I had no friends two years ago, I'd been cheated on by "the love of my life", had to relocate to London and was terribly lonely. Now I am possibly one of the happiest people, and have to keep a social diary so I don't double-book!

Take a leap hon, it's most definitely worth it. :-)

You need to find a hobby that can be pursued in a group / club / clubs

Try going to a dance class or two - you'd be suprised how friendly they are and you pick up social skills along the way.

Take interest in a lot of things, your world will open up! Don't feel any reservations in talking to people: and, make friends selectively, and get to be a close friend to a few, again, selectively! Read books, good books! Observe people around you with interest, analytically: be circumspect!
