Capitalism may work until it devours itself. That is, until the corporate elite have forced down wages so much throughout the world, that no one can afford to buy what they produce.
In other words, until they kill the goose that lays the golden eggs - the middle and working classes.

unfortunately it seems that way. read 'steppenwolf' by herman hesse. It describes the bourgoise (the rich capitalist business people) and the place of the people in the world and how they maintain the system.
capitialism is mad, it makes some rich and many more poor. why it survives is because the middle class majority all have the hope for being rich (though they cannot because if everyone got richer things get more expensive =same situation). They want to get rich, cant see they wont, but they can also see the homeless and unemployed below and are scared to become them. It's the trap of capitalism enslaving the middle class.
im not a big fan of communism but they never had unemployment, and things went so bad like you saw in the western propaganda. It's all about sides, and the winner writes the history books eh.

I have a minor in history. I am lost as to understand what you mean by history repeating itself. Now if you are referring to the stock market crash in the early twentieth century, that was an economics glitch of over exuberance. That had nothing to do with capitalism
I will give you a structure example of economics. China is a Communist country and their stock market seems doomed to crash, just like the USA in the early twentieth century. I will tell you that the opposite of communism is capitalism, if you are a reader of the isms.
The system will not crash. Now, the USA stock market could crash. But it is more likely the Communist China stock market will crash. So, toss out the capitalism theory.
This was a good eye opening question.

Capitalism works where socialism and communism fail. Capitalism works for a very simple reason. It empowers the individual rather than the state or the collective. Other forms of government deny the natural human desire to achieve in life. People are born equal, but they do not remain so as they grow and evolve. There will always be people willing to work harder to achieve more and socialist theory cannot embrace or account for this simple idea. So my answer is yes, capitalism is sustainable.

Ugh. i do no longer understand if I ever seen all people misunderstand an economic gadget as much as you and that's quite saying something for this website. this is gloomy you have so little faith in the opportunity of the guy. there's no longer one entity or employer (no longer even faith) in the international that has brought about as lots carnage and destruction as large helpful government. Nuclear weapons international wars Holocaust Famine yet you sit down here and insist large helpful government. this is the only way you could accomplish your aims. might desire to I settle for indentured servitude to politicians and government now, or wait till they thoroughly administration me? i will pass away you with a quote that describes you and a variety of of alternative others completely: “Few adult adult males prefer liberty. maximum everybody is happy with a in basic terms grasp.” -Gaius Sallustius Crispus (Sallust) .

Capitalism is a MONSTER that eats anything and once it has eaten everything, it begins eating itself. Given that there are finite resources on this planet to feed the MONSTER, I would have to conclude that capitalism is not sustainable in any way, shape or form. When you consider the waste and pollution the MONSTER defecates daily, the answer is obvious.

It can be sustainable as long as government can adequately balance the act of encouraging business without business or capital exploiting resources- be it people, intellectual or material.
The Scandinavian states seem to do a good job.

Given time, it could collapse. What we would have to hope for are hardcore conservatives whose policies widen the line between the haves and the have-nots and pro-business practices that make it more difficult for people to even afford basic necessities like health care, gasoline, and, now, even milk. I think it would take about twenty years of strict conservative control to make people rise up against the capitalists though.

US is not a true capitalistic nation. If it were, we'd get monopolies again. Farmers wouldnt be subsidized.
