If you don´t want to use chemicals, you can spray your plants regularly (maybe once a week) with water/soap mixture. (10 parts water, 1 part dish soap). For 20 plants it is a bit of work, but it gets rid of aphids easily.
By the way, I started growing tomatoes this year too. MAKE sure you put mulch under them, and remove the leaves at the bottom so that hard rain will not splash dirt onto the plant. This just happened to mine, and they got a mould right away.
Hope they grow well! :-)

You will have to determine what method works best for you. Sevin is overkill for most common pests, and probably shouldn't treat unless you actually develop a problem. Marigolds are where we get pyrethrin, which is good for nematode control. Sevin controls jap. beetles, whiteflies, some caterpillars, ticks. Soap sprays are probably the easiest, cheapest method, but doesn't necessarily work on the tougher critters ( just keeps them clean) Dipel dust is also used sometimes (contains Bt) will kill caterpillars. Since we obviously eat tomatoes, I just don't cover mine in chemicals. Generally, I address my issues according to the types of damage I see. Hope this helps... by the way if this is a newly planted area you may want to sidedress your tomato plants with some dolomitic lime, the calcium will help prevent blossom end rot.

Jeri.....I had the same problem and my 85 year old Mom solved it by advising me to plant MARIGOLDS around the tomato plants.

Yup...Marigolds.....but be sure to get the "stinky" marigolds. Bugs HATE the smell. (Some marigolds are bred not to have any fragrance) Any nursery should know what you mean.

Now my garden looks prettier AND keeps the bugs away....and I didn't have to use any chemicals. (BTW Jennifer was right..."Sevin" works great but I'm trying to keep my garden as chemical-free as I can.

Also..."Miracle Gro" has an EXCELLENT tomato plant fertilizer that I use weekly and my plants are taller than I am (I'm 6'2) and they produce bushels of big tomatoes.......One more tip...keep the vines off the ground by tying them to stakes or cages.....and when you water....water the ground and NOT the plants leaves or fruit.

Here's Miracle-Gro's tomato plant food page:

Panty hose are the best to tie with. they gained't injury the vegetation and stretch. I desire tomato cages, which are available numerous heights. they save the vegetation extra effective contained. a competent wood stake is additionally used. you pick a stake it relatively is a minimum of 5-6 ft long so as that it relatively is place far adequate interior the floor to get stable help, and function approximately 4 ft approximately floor. Pinch the tops off the vegetation whilst they get to approximately 4 ft so the plant will dedicate extra capability to fruit production rather of transforming into.

As I have said before, the best thing I have used is straight up dish soap and water and spray on with a spray bottle. Very safe and effective. :) Good luck!

You can use seven dust. It's bought at most feedstores or anywhere that sells plants. It's in a red bag. I use this on my whole garden.
