You are sentenced to death and to survive, you must win a game with the king. The game goes like this: there are 2 pieces of paper, 1 containing 'life', the other containing 'death'.
The paper will be turned face down and if you pick 'life', you get to live but pick 'death' and you're a gonner.

The night before the game you hear that your arch-rival has purposely made 2 'death' cards to make sure you die. On the day of the game, what must you do to survive, knowing that the 2 cards contain 'death'?

Announce that you will let someone else choose one of the cards first and that the remaining card will be your fate. When they draw the first card, it will say 'death'; the other card must read 'life' so you're off the hook.

how are you so sure the game is fixed? the sentence states he "heard" there were two death cards, but maybe it was a distraction?

in any event, if it truly was a fact, bargain with the king, best 2 out of 3. Or, tell the king to show you the papers to make sure one does say life and the other death, before he mixes it up to ensure parity. Everyone gets a fair trial.

Greet the king in front of the audience. Praise the king for his wisdom. Ask king if he wrote the cards. If it was not the king who wrote it, ask who. Make sure that the king has publicly announced the writer. Pick up the cards at the same time and show it to the public. It will cause public anarchy.
