Elvis is still revered as one of the greatest singers of the early rock era. But was his star waning? He was already doing The Strip. His weight was ballooning and I think had he not died he would have ended up being a joke.
Cliff (I'm watching him on Performance) was known as the British Elvis, he had the same attributes as Elvis ... good looking, young, a terrific singer. Cheesy dancer and ham actor. He's considered a joke because he's never done drugs and has looked after himself ... he's a good role model.
Would Elvis have been lampooned had he lived into his dotage?

By the way, I have nothing against being fat - I'm 21 stones myself but my meaning was that he'd gone from a svelte young singer to eating deep fried banana and peanut butter sandwiches ... He wasn't looking after himself and when you're in the public eye, that can be fatal for your career.
Lampoon means to make fun of (strictly speaking, it's in writing). I believe that National Lampoon is the American equivalent to our Carry Ons.

Oh don't worry, I knew I was committing what would be considered pop culture blasphemy with this question.
How can Cliff's love songs be directed towards guys????
The Day I Met Marie
Carrie
Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha
Livin' Doll
When The Girl In Your Arms
A Girl Like You
Don't Talk To Him
Etc.
I happen to like the early Elvis and without his influence, there wouldn't have been a Cliff but I seem to have touched a nerve here.
Sorry about that.

No he had gone through the out of favour stage ...and if had lived i am sure he would have realised it may happen again , (due to all you say) ...and would have dealt with it and turned his demons around...!!!!!!...and yes Cliff does not get all the recognition he deserves apart than from his fans...!!

I think Elvis was already 'naff' long before he died. He had a lovely voice and was incredibly good looking when young but the years leading up to his death were, in my opinion, the beginning of the end of his reign. Many of his songs will be regarded as 'classics' and rightly so, but his cheesy songs and naff outfits still make me cringe. I dare say I will receive many thumbs down but before you all hit the 'bad answer' button, just stop and think, it's not about the man it's about the image. Elvis was a rock icon and will remain so in the hearts and minds of his millions of fans across the globe, but the people responsible for his image should have been sacked long before he died. Finally, I am in total agreement with others about Cliff Richard. He cannot be compared to Elvis, in fact he is just a pale imitation.

No, that never would have happened I don't think. People love Elvis and He is the king of rock and roll so he's an American icon. Hopefully, had he lived and gotten some real medical attention, he would have gotten himself together and regrouped. It's too bad that rehab wasn't so popular to the stars back then. That probably would have saved him.

Not in my book he isn't. Am currently listening to the Elvis Ultimate Gospel album and it's unbeatable for that kind of music.(Personal opinion). The fact that he died young (too young) means that he is elevated to "legend" status. Whether he would have been lampooned, ridiculed etc is pure hypothesis simply because we'll never know.

I love Elvis - but wasn't born when he died.
But even I can see you cannot compare the 2 you have mentioned. Cliff is a joke and a fruad - Elvis was real!

If you want to know a very good vocal coach try to visit https://tr.im/JXWSi an online vocal coaching tutorial. Everything, ranging from breathing fundamentals, vocalizing exercises, techniques on singing high and low notes, how to not go off-key/out of tune/off-sync, musicianship and music theory, proper diction and articulation, and a lot more are covered, all in our native language. It can be quite technical in nature, but it really helps since it covers the musical aspect of singing deeply and not just concentrates on how to impress people with your vocal range, riffs and runs and other cliches that do not necessarily make one a complete vocalist.

Anyone who knows the story with Elvis knows it was his doctor who was precribing to many pills to him - and they caused him to balloon in weight.
If he were to have lived I hope he would have got a better doctor. Cliff is a wet towel!
Elvis - there is no-one alive like him, with even half of his talent!

He already was really. He was past his prime when he died and considered old and washed up as the 60's brought in new acts that he could not compete with.
It comes down to the music and performance showmanship really, and Elvis wins there. There is only one Elvis. The death probably did ensure his legendary status though.
