Enough people have been hurt by well-intentioned honesty that they feel the need to be untruthfully kind and from their the people they know don't feel that it would be right to return their kindness with harsh truth and so it spreads.

It's not about freedom of speech, it's about tact!
If lets say you are repulsed by plus size girls, and you see one walking down the street one day and you say....."hey fat girl! move out the way you're blocking the sun" Is that gonna make you look like an a*s? or a brave man?
It takes a brave man to listen and reevaluate what come out of his mouth...rather than talk S*H*I*T

Because a humans, we need to met in the "middle". If you come in strong, they go on defensive or offensive. If you come in weak, they'll take advantage of you. Either way, it is a matter of respect but you have to be discreet and subtle when you try to convey what's on your mind.

Well, I don't know who you are hanging out with but maybe they are just uptight or boring. Friends and family should respect our opinions and value them. I respect people much more when they voice their opinions, not being all pushy or condecending, but just stating them and being respectful. And I think that people with good, honest, well thought-out, backed up opinions are smarter and just plain cooler.

Because there can be some idiots out there that'll just snap back repulsively without thinking carefully first. :P Easily disturbed some people are, I guess.
