I agree with the others, my favourite book store on-line is Amazon. It is easy to search, excellent service, you can buy used books and later you can sell books yourself. It also has music, soft wear and much more. Besides the American branch, they have a store in the UK and Germany, just change. www.amazon.com to www.amazon.uk (or de).
If your branch of study is very specialized (like mine), books can take a little bit longer to arrive, but 98% of the time they find them.
After reading my answer, I sound like a commercial, I hope that Amazon gives me a porcentaje for this service lol ;-)

Amazon is really good and really reliable, but don't just shop there. Make sure you check other places first because often you can find a better deal elsewhere. Case in point, Amazon wanted to charge me $11.50 or so for the book Sahara. I found it on Overstock.com for a little over $7.00 which by the time I had it shipped for another $2.95, it still was lower than the Amazon price (which didn't include the shipping).
Here are some sites to check before you buy from Amazon.
http://www.overstock.com
http://www.abebooks.com/
http://www.alibris.com/
http://www.booksamillion.com/
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/
http://www.buy.com
http://search.half.ebay.com/_W0QQ
http://www.textbookx.com/
Do you know exactly what book you want? Try doing a search in a shopping search engine. These are places you can search for a specific product and they will return results with pictures, places that sell the product, and prices (for comparison). Some of these sites are Shopping.com, Become.com, Nextag, and Pricegrabber.
If you know what store you want to shop at, try looking up coupons for that store by doing a search in Google or Yahoo for the store name and the word coupon.
Finally, if you know you are planning on buying a lot of books online, consider joining a shopping rewards program. I think Barnes and Noble or Borders has a frequent shopper program. There are also online free shopping rewards programs that offer you gift cards or cash back for shopping online. A couple I know of are Memolink.com and Upromise.

Amazon has it for $16.80 US For pre order Barnes and Noble is $17.74 pre order. Take your pick. I would avoid Borders they may not be around when the book come out. They are in bankruptcy and many book Sellers are on a cash only with them.
