She says I'm way too old, that you have to have started when you were tiny. I don't want to be a proffesional or anything, I want to do it for fun, friends, fitness and something to do. I've started contemporary this year and I've caught on fine! How can I convince her that 14 isn't too old?

I don't want to like argue with her and make her give in cos I'll feel bad and guilty whenever I do ballet. I want to get her to actually see that I should start

show her you really want to learn, and tell her you will put in your effort to dance well and do her proud. also if she nags about the cost, then say you will pay some money on your own

Sit down with your mom and have a heart to heart. Tell her the reasons why you want to shave your legs. Tell her that it is embarassing and uncomfortable to have such hairy legs when you want to wear shorts or even a skirt/dress out. Ask her why she's against you shaving and maybe the both of you can come to some sort of understanding. There are so many ways to get rid of your hair on your legs that "shaving" isn't the only option. Ask if you can use a depilatory cream like Nair or Veet. Your legs are bare for longer than they would be shaving and they feel smoother. You can also wax but there's a little pain that goes with that. If you do want to shave I would use a really nice razor, maybe like the Venus, because you don't want to nick yourself with the cheap ones. The cheap ones also only have one blade whereas the nicer ones (Venus) has like 3-4 blades and lets you get a closer shave. Make sure you lather on some shaving cream first... Are your arms that hairy, like a gorilla, that you really think you need to shave? I mean if you can't see your skin through all the hair that's growing then I guess you could. All the same ways for hair removal apply. It just depends on which one you want to do. If it's like peach fuzz then don't worry about it. I bet you no one notices your arms the way you do.

My parents were the same way thinking that if I started ballet it would be a waste of time. I started my first class when I was 18. It has been a challenge because I am taking classes with girls who have been dancing since they were young. If you have the passion then I think it's worth pursuing.

Tell your mother that you want to do this because you don't want to live with the regret if knowing that you could have danced. Especially if it just for fun.

Good Luck!

Remind her that it's a fun way to get exercise and a great after school activity. Many dance school offer classes specifically for ages 13&up, so it's not like you would be the only teenager in your classes. You would make new friends, get exercise, and have fun all at the same time! =O

There's no such thing as too old. fourteen is pretty good, but professionals start at 6-7yrs. Still, you can be really, really good and if you're doing it for fun... why not???????
Good luck and i say GO FOR IT!!!
***actually, I like ballet too. I learn alot from watching videos (no big moves though) and pictures. I would really like to learn. Don't worry, I don't try to do any pointe footwork or anything dangerous. GOOD LUCK!***

well, ballet improves ur balance, flexibility, and posture, as well as other things. it teaches u 2 move gracefully and control your whole body. it also is fun, develops strength, keeps u at a healthy weight, and helps u meet lots of new friends (i met my best friend thru ballet classes) taht share your interests. tell her all of these things, and make sure she knows that u dont expect 2 become part of a company or anything. good luck!

Tell her that half the nation is starting yoga at 40 for the same reasons you want to start ballet. Also, tell her that there are no famous ballet dancers, and that she should just stop dreaming.

well if your not doing it as a career and just for fun i dont see what the problem is....lots of people of random ages learn all kinds of dance just because its fun or its the only way theyll get exercise. try doing chores and getting good grades....maybe shell be in a good mood and shell let you take ballet.

just tell her u're doing it for fun and that for that u don't need an ideal age range. just say u would REALLY like to try it out. if u're really dying to dance, go do it secretly, if u cn skip meals n save up money for the fees. WHICH IS apparently discouraged.
