Basically both the audio and video are jumpy whilst I am uploading or downloading things to a second used hard drive I got about a year ago

its jumpy because you are forcing it to access 2 things at once. So, it splits the time it works on each.

It may also have a lot of "file fragmentation" Run a defragmenting program (and go do something else while it runs... leave the computer alone or you'll make things worse)

can you do 10 jobs at once? how much do you expect out of you computer,

Every process uses both memory and processor so you want to now why it's sluggish, playing videos is enough without uploading or downloading at the same times, you gota choice one or the other,,,

upload or download, and go watch TV. while it's done Watch movie on computer... download/upload later..

No more sluggish movies

because you are trying to both read and write to the harddrive at the same time just try burning a dvd and playing a decent game at the same time and you will see the same effect
