I believe the players name was Thayer and he deveeloped the cup in the 1860s.
(I do not look up answers but I think this one is right.)

I believe most all playersat professional levels do.. i know umpires do behind the plate and on bases. Heck I wear one when I watch a game on TV. I trust no one.
