I have been hit many times with Black Cat firecrackers and bottle rockets when I have participated in wars with others. Sure it hurt, but I did not lose any digits or eyesight.
Once, we were on the Mississippi Gulf Coast watching a city detonate their $$$$$ display. We were about 50 yards away watching them ignite them and the fireworks shoosh through the night sky and exploding. About 5 minutes into the display, a drunk walked over and knocked over the lanterns that the exhibitionists were using for lights.
All of the sudden, the display goes off all at once. My girlfriend and I lay as flat as we could on the sandy beach while the entire program went off above our heads. We were showered with debris, but it was an awesome thing to be able to witness. It was cool because we got to see the security wrestle with the drunk guy and then we got to watch them run and take cover as everything went up.

Back in the 1980's our family (and hundreds of other families)used to go to the beach at Santa Cruz, Ca and at dusk people would shoot off their fireworks independently and of course those fireworks did not always fly toward the water and would end up around our family blankets on the beach since most of us were within only 25 yards from the shore. We had some close misses but by 1990 the city banned residents from shooting off fireworks at the beach. dah

yes, almost, we were at a "professional" display of a city and the professional fireworks team was on a type of flatbed tralior, (which was probably too close to the spectators, when you think about it) then all of the sudden, one major lit firecracker cake fell over and hit the box that held to rest of the displays, and they all went off at once, flying in all different directions. Talk about a crowd scatter, luckily no one was hurt.
