The islanders might have a vague feeling of isolation. It'd depend though on the size of the island, it's distance to a mainland, if it had any important cities, and whether the population was largely native or immigrant. For example, Australia is an island, but the feelings of its residents might be very different from the residents of a tiny South Pacific island.
