Hey fellow red. Never would I. I have however picked up a poor young mother who was trying to carry her big baby, suitcase while holding the hand of her other child on the highway. They looked totally "lost". Evidently her boyfriend had beaten up on her and she was taking the kids to her mother's house which was 20 miles away. I said, "You are walking all the way there?" She said, "I will do what I have to do." I felt so bad for her. Also once when I was working home health I saw a young man on the side of the road with the hood of his car up and a little girl all dressed up in tights ready for school. I gave them a ride back to their house. Probably not smart, but I was worried about the little girl.

Only if the Hitch Hiker was a runaway teen so I could return them home. I think it is dangerous to pick up people. Maybe if I had a big strong man with me... I don't know, not my idea of fun :[

I would never pick up a hitch hiker. You can't trust a complete stranger nowadays.

Yes to both.
Not a good idea, but when I picked the guy up, I was with 2 other guys.
When hitchhiking (after our car broke down on the way to a funeral) my brothers and I were well dressed, it was the middle of the morning and I wouldn't have done it but for the importance of getting to the funeral. And once when our car broke down in the middle of the night and we had a car full of kids, accepted the lift from a good Samaritan, after he spent about 20 minutes convincing us he was safe, even offering the number of his work (he was on his way to work as a night chef) to give him a reference! And have accepted lifts from other parents at my kids school. But that was years ago, maybe I wouldn't do it today.
And I have picked up parents with children going to my kids school when they were walking on rainy days. And once during a hailstorm stopped to give shelter to a mum and her two littlies. Took a lady who had fallen in the street to her home. Technically I suppose they weren't hitchhiking, but I did give them a lift. After all, caution must be tinged with compassion.

My sister had her car flagged down on a country road, by someone in the middle of the road, so slowed down, but as she did another guy came out of the bushes on the side of the road, tried to open the passenger door, so she drove off.
So whether your a driver or a hiker TAKE CARE!

it depends on the appearance of the hitch hiker. when I was young 13, 14 I used to hitch hike all over. one time we got picked up by these nazi looking dudes right out of prison. they gave us a ride to hemp fest in seattle. they were pretty strange dudes.

I've never picked one up but I've hitched several times. It's scary for the hitcher, there are lots of scary people in the world.

I used to , but now I would be afraid of someone accusing me abducting them and being sued or whatever. Sad society we live in. I don't even talk to people on the street any more. Why would someone want to take a chance of getting picked up by some wierdo.
