A about a year ago, the left lights on the dashboard went out. Slowly the problem got worse. Tonight most of the interior dash lights were out or really dim and the battery gauge was reading very low. The vehicle starts and doesnt seem to change when driving. The interior lights run off the aux are just fine, only low when the truck is on. Could be the alternator, but I am wondering if its a fuse issue or short, any thoughts?

This sounds like a the classic death throws of an alternator. It does help to check the connections since you will occasionally find a loose nut or plug on the alternator and the connection is so-so and the battery can't keep up.

You do need to do a load test on the battery because it can happen that the battery is at the end of it's life and will not take a charge and it isn't putting out the right voltage to the accessories.

the bulbs in your dash are probably blown, I cant see a altenator going bad and then lasting a full year. I mean it can happen but is very improbable. I you can test it by using a volt meter putting the red lead on positive post and black lead on negative post.if you dont have one, you can get a cheap one at walmart or any auto or hardware store. test the battery before you start the car. should be around 12-13 voltes then start it and test the battery again. it should be around 14.8

It must be your battery that is going to run out any moment.
