I am curious what the difference is because i want a deeper, louder, throatier sound with my exhaust yet a full exhaust system is about 800 dollars where as new mufflers are only about 200. I am curious which one would be better in terms of making my car sound louder and have a throatier exhaust note.

If you just want noise, go with the mufflers. If you want a well tuned engine to go with the noise, get a full system probably including intake and ignition work. After that [if you want to go for more, or max horsepower] it starts to get expensive.

Who the heck has an $800 price tag on an exhaust? Potentially if you went stainless steel all the way and included a new catalytic convertor it could add up to $800.

You can legally remove the muffler so long as there is a catalytic convertor in place and use a tailpipe "muffler" if just pipes behind the cat convertor are too loud.

The best bet, if the car exhaust is new enough, is a different muffler that has less back pressure and lets more engine noise through. If the car exhaust is older, you rarely can salvage the pipes unless they are in fact stainless steel and the exhaust from the cat convertor back would have to be replaced, pipes, hangers, muffler.

Just make sure that when you alter the exhaust system you have to retain heat shielding so your floor mats and carpet don't burst into flames when your doing 130MPH.

It's happened more than once.

Good Luck!

The muffler is only one part of the exhaust. The rest of the system are the exhaust pipes and tailpipes to also increase exhaust flow. The two combined together will do more than just the muffler will. They make complete kits to replace the entire exhaust system because factory systems are more restricted than the replacement ones.

Ask at a good exhaust shop. There might be a tailpipe extension that can be fitted after the muffler. A full new exhaust is the muffler and all pipes from the exhaust manifold. Much more expensive than just a muffler.

The muffler is at the very end of your exhaust system. All it does is muffle the sound of the exhaust which is why people can somewhat tune their exhaust note depending on which one they buy.

Most people save money (and complexity) by buying "cat-back" exhaust systems which only replace everything from the catalytic converter back, not the entire exhaust system.

depends what kind of car you have for a v8 get a cam, headers, midpipe with cat delete or hi flow cats, and a chambered muffler, for a v6 just get a catback system and for a 4 banger get headers and a full catback, stay away from fart cans
