"All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. This is an excellent book that illustrates the realities of war during the First World War.
You might want to do a little bit of research before you read it. I haven't read this book but it was suggested to be really good. Check out "The Storm of Steel." I can't spell the author's name but look up the book on Amazon. It's also about the first world war as well.

Either Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley are good ones. They're both really short, but intensely interesting and are considered classics.

I remember using Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men more than once during high school. It was the shortest book I could find and not a bad read at all. However, if you want a fun read, I'd go for Brave New World, one of my all time favorites...(I'm a sucker for an anti-utopian book). good luck.

Animal Farm
its short, its a classic, its easy to read/enjoyable and its really all about communism. So in case you have to write a paper about it there'll be LOTS to say
OR you could read
Of Mice and Men
Also a short,enjoyable classic
