What state are you in and what are you licensed for?
I became an independent insurance agent in 1986, but started off writing for just one company which changed it's name to AFLAC.
About 18 month later, I was offered a position as district manager while still being independent in other lines by a company which had better rates for the customer and far superior benefits.
Then they changed their marking methods to imitate or clone another company. Being a single parent of 3 children, I could not go on the road for a week and live in a hotel, so I switched companies.
I added a new company which did not charge higher premiums by age bands as long as one of the couple was under age 65 at application time.
With insurance, as you have learned, it's not working a few hours a week in between golf games.
You write business that gets turned down or rated, because the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) indicates they need to be declined or charged a higher rate.
You have people who you drive many miles to see who won't answer the door, but you see them peeking out of the curtains.
You have people who take out a policy and quickly cancel it, after they get the free gift which you paid for.
Then the company has some big rate increases and you lose many customers to your competitors.
You work hard to develop a block of business in a niche market, then the company changes their rates, underwriting requirements, or other terms.
You find out with so many offering the same products that everyone says they already have too much life insurance, and are even thinking about canceling a few policies, or another LINE.
You have to reschedule many times for a prospect, but finally get the application signed and the check ... which bounces or comes back as account closed.
Under AFLAC, I was liable for the advanced commissions of sub-agents that I recruited. They pressured me to hire one agent that I had very strong suspicions would be trouble. It turns out that he only wanted to work to get drug money, and only worked when he was not dealing drugs. The drugs meant he had short and long-term memory problems. He didn't end up writing any business, because he couldn't work when he was on drugs or strung out, or follow directions.
You can get sued under E&O which hopefully you have coverage for now and your deductible isn't too high.
Some companies will let you be independent in a certain line, but want you to only write your medical or a certain line with them.
Now since you are looking at becoming an independent insurance agent ... why not break down all the barriers or problems that make you want to be an independent agent ?
How would you like to write business that just has:
one simple application;
NO underwriting (no rejected apps);
NO AGE BANDED PREMIUMS;
NO ZIP CODE rated premiums;
NO extra charges to add family members;
NO LICENSE required in any state for one coverage;
No-co-payments !!!;
Pre-existing conditions which are covered by 2 areas of coverage;
coverage may begin immediately except for a 15 delay for one area of coverage;
Monthly membership fees have NEVER been increased for existing members in over 34 years;
License or registration required in only 14 states for one group of coverage;
NOW the GREAT NEWS is for building your brokerage which is what many independent agents long-term goal is.
You can recruit part time agents since no license is required for one coverage in 50 states plus some Canadian Provinces.
NO NON-resident licenses required to get over-rides on any of their business;
They can form their own brokerages … while you still earn and get higher commissions based on their volume;
NO LIABILITY for commissions advance to sub-agents;
NO TERRITORY restrictions in the USA or CANADA, although some states or provinces may be more of a challenge;
Free replenishment of marketing materials, based upon production;
Contests for monthly car bonuses and all-expenses-paid trips for two that hundreds win, not just a few;
Long term RESIDUAL income for as long as the coverage is in force, not a limited number of years as a service contract (I've had my coverage for 22 years!);
Your RESIDUAL income is willable to your spouse, children, church, or favorite charity; and
many other important points to build your future.
Many in the insurance and financial planning industry offer our coverage, and quite a few now have our coverage’s as their main source of income.
We have one lady with our company who is a single parent in a very POOR area (MS) who was featured in a article about ladies with home-based businesses. The others were thrilled to be making $30,000 or $40,000 from home while Beth Taylor made OVER $100,000 a year.
You can read the article at:

I'm on the team of a former insurance agent, Bake, who is making over $200,000 a year in RESIDUAL income, and his cousin Ken is making over $500,000 a year in RESIDUAL income. Bake retired and his wife, Millie , continued to do what she loved with the business. She's had heart, stroke, and other health problems which have kept her from working for the last 5 years, but her RESIDUAL income is still over $200,000 a year due to her past sales and the continued efforts of her team.
The most important point is that we have two main areas of coverage for which we have UNIQUE coverage with no real competitors. As the pioneer and leader of the industry, the industry bears our company's name.
I'd be happy to give you more information from one agent to another agent.

During June single parents and those 55 or over can get started for just $25 and $49 for others, instead of the regular price of $249 !!!
