"phile" is the suffix used for one who loves something (comes from Greek), and "hippos" is the Greek word for horse, hence it is "Hippophile".
Technical info: \Hip"po*phile\, n. [Gr. "i`ppos horse + ? to love.] [Origin: 1850–55; hippo- + -phile]

That does not mean a person who like the hippopotamus ;)

my 2 granddaughters have also, nothing wrong, apparently my daughter in law was the same when she was young, so it must be in the genes, but as she said it was better than boys and they will grow out of it, when the right boy comes along, as my son brags, but it is an expensive hobby I give a donation instead of presents i have been told by my g kids to give money as the horses cannot eat presents,

Nothing strange here. A lot of young girls love horses and find it a stimulating past-time. She's just a normal kid who loves horses - A horse lover.

(you could call her Gee Gee Gabor!)
