Blame MLB for the "steroids era," not just Bonds. If you can't stand the fact that players may have used steroids, boycott the entire league and stop paying attention to it. Blame every player that may have used along with baseball execs and officials for never doing anything about it. Let's not put it all on one player because he's close to a record. If MLB lets Barry take all the blame for league-wide mistakes then they're no better than him(Much worse even). Punishing one big name won't make the steroids era magically disappear.

With the media doing the witch hunt on Barry like they are, it's easy to overlook the fact that he's still accomplished so much more then the average player. I saw a stat the other day that said Ty Cobb stole home 54 times! Does that mean we put an asterisk by his name because he was famous for sharpening his spikes? The HOF has gone asterisk happy and needs to just let go. Barry admitted to using them, but when they weren't considered illegal in baseball. Instead of trying to hang the guy, enjoy something you may not ever see again. Anybody looked at Pujols lately? What about the controversey that he's not the age he says he is?

I certainly believe he deserves the title when he surpasses it!
1. Why would MLB erase his HR's during the so-called "drugged up" period in his career, if he never tested positive for anything? There are no drugs out there that are "undetectible" because it's nonsense. Cyclists and track stars took "undetectible" drugs, but tested positive for them.
2. What's with the asterisks? If people are saying "place asterisks" next to Bonds' totals, it means that they have no proof other than hearsay and circumstantial evidence and that they are accepting it by saying; "why not, let him surpass the record and keep the HR's..... just put a pretty star next to the number".....
3. No one is twisting anyone's arm to celebrate or watch the record surpassing HR! Watch something else, cheer on your own team or go bowling or fishing. I'm sure even SF Giants fans will not all watch the record breaking HR. It's not mandatory!!!!!
4. He is just being blamed for other players' indiscretions because of the smear campaign placed upon him by the media outlets. If he's not in the mood for granting interviews, that's not solid basis for accusing him of taking drugs. Sad thing is that the public is brainwashed into thinking like the media and calling him names.

Too much Bonds on Yahoo Answers...
When he hits homer #756 it's his record until someone takes it away. No asterisk, no special notation, no qualifying indicators.
As others above have noted we can think he's guilty of taking substances that weren't even against the rules to begin with, but it has not been proven (at least publicly) that he took them. Innocent till proven guilty. That's how things should work in America.
The man gets zero points for charm, but he has had an amazing baseball career.

There shouldn't be too much argument over my opinion (at least I hope not):
If he did not take steroids, no matter how big of a jerk he is, he should break the record and fans of the game should recognize the accomplishment. This is America!
If it can definitively be proven that he 100% without a doubt cheated, all of his stats should remain official, but they should be marked with the most disgraceful mark a player's personal stats can ever, EVER receive: the asteric.

I think he deserves it. It's baseball's fault, remember that. Yeah people pick on Barry because he is going to break a major record but I think it is wrong. We don't know the full scope of players who actually were involved with HGH. Nobody makes a fuss about Clemens, who might have taken them. I believe Clemens took them but he never failed a test. AH HA! Barry never failed one either. Show me a positive test and I will change my mind about Barry but until then people should just shut up.
I can't wait for Barry to break the record! I am not even a Bonds fan but I think he is one of the greatest ever, with or without drugs. I like how people like to judge Barry even though they have no hard evidence that he took HGH. Speculate all you want.

why? should we take away all of babe ruth's homers because he never hit against a black pitcher?
baseball until a few years ago never had a steroid policy. that's not the player's fault. it's the owners and the comish. don't blame the players. barry may have used, but he's never tested positive or admitted it. and if he was using, i imagine so were many of the pitchers he went yard against and many of the fielders he was hitting to. baseball is an ever evolving game. records get broken. so what?

I know there is nothing to celebrate about. And yes they should be wiped away. His record should be wiped out back until he started steriods. The MLB needs to make a statement about not using steriods. They kicked out Pete Rose cause they wanted to make a statment and took away his chances of being in the Hall of Fame. The MLB just charges these big star players a fine if they get caught and even though its a lot of money its nothing to these guys and they will just keep taking them.

This weekend, while watching SF at Phila, I saw two things onTV which struck me.
The first was, when the writers were interviewing BB. One asked "This is Phila, the fans will boo you. how do you feel about it." He smiled and said,"I don't care as long as they come out." OhMygosh! He can handle it?
Next, in the 9th, Cole Hammels struck out BB, swinging. As he walked away he looked at the pitcher and there was sort of a smile on his face, like he was saying ":good pitch."
So, he CAN act like a real human being.
To your question, yes, it is a new HR record, and should stand. Celebrating.
""Yawn!" Like, it wasn't going to happen? Why get excited.? I can't.

I'm not a Bonds apologist, but here's the situation: there's no solid evidence that Bonds took steroids.
Even then, do you retroactively wipe out almost two decades worth of baseball records because some guys may have been roiding?
