What do you need the server to do? If it just for file storage, I would use a linux server - very stable, very quick to setup, works great with windows clients. You do need to install Samba on the server to share the files with windows.

Linux even has a great domain controler if you want that type of setup.

Both OS have regular updates, this could present problems depending on the local permissions. For Windows there is a method to push these to the devices remotely. Windows wins hand down in terms of training. The Linux clients for RDP has some limitations, so I would recommend Windows on both Server and workstation this will be much easier to support.

Yes you can run an Apachy server and XP on your workstations. If you are running older workstations I would recommend Windows 2000 Professional. It is very stable and uses very little computer resources.

Personally I would run Windows 2000 Advanced Server and buy the number of licences you need to setup your work station.
EX: If you have 5 computer buy W2k AS with 5 client licences
