Then I would say you did not follow the instructions correctly.

Here is the physical conections you need.

-Cable from the wall to the broadband modem
-Ethernet cable from the Broadband Modem to the Routers WAN (INTERNET) Port
-Ethernet cable from the routers ethernet port to the ethernet port on your computer.

You will then need to log into the router and set it up to log into your ISP before you can get internet access.

When you log into the router, see your install guide on how to do that, you will find the WAN section and select PPPOE as your connection type and put the username and password you use to log into your ISP and save . That should give you internet access with all computers connected to your router.

You missed a few key things that would help someone answer your question.
1) Is this a wireless and wired router? If so are you trying to connect and set-up the router using a wireless connection to the new router from a laptop
2) Are you using a wired/wireless router combo which you are using a wired connection (desktop) to set up the router? If so, then having issues with any wireless connections where the wired ones are fine?
3) Lost connections where, from the computer to the router or lost connection to the internet?

In addition there is an option in your router for using what MAC address you wish to use for the internet side of the connection. Many times your internet service provider will only allow one MAC address (think of this as a VIN for a car) per broadband modem. So the new router will have a MAC address that is different and the ISP may or may not immediately allow your new MAC address to connect to the internet.
