You need to decide too in what area is this scientist an expert. Is he a chemist, a geologist, a physicist? Then, you need to decide what his problem is and how he's going to go about trying to solve it. It may help, or not, to decide before you start writing whether or not (s)he's going to solve the problem. If you're writing short play, the conflict isn't going to be too complex.

Remember, if this is a play, people are supposed to see and hear it, not sit and read it. Make it something you would like to watch.
