Hello:

I like Elana's response! :-)

One correction, however:

Ubuntu Linux is found at:
http://www.ubuntu.com
or
http://www.ubuntulinux.org

The address she listed for Ubuntu is actually something else. An easy mistake to make, though.

Cheers!

Go to the manufactors website and download the driver for vista. With vista you have to download new drivers for you hardware or it want work. If you don't know what manufactor it is go to you control panel and look under system and click device manager and look for sound and there it will tell you the name of the device. Thats all you need is the driver for your hardware. I am a pc repair tech and i have been in business for over 16 years now, and this is a common issue with Vista. The other answers you got are all wrong, and not even close to what the problem is.

Download and install a Vista compatible driver of your soundcard.

I'll bet it worked with -Xp installed, right?

Your operating system is defective. I recommend replacing
it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com
http://www.opensuse.org
http://www.debian.org
http://www.ubuntu.org
http://www.slackware.org
http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.opensolaris.org

Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to
viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're
all free.

it either does recognize your motherboard sound system or if you have a sound card then it doesn't recognize that.
Vista has a problem of not being compatible with older accessories.
