area... for area, you'll always have units of square inches (in^2), or square feet (ft^2), or square centimeters (cm^2), or square meters (m^2), and so on...

Take it from a math teacher... it's area. The number of CUBES in a figure would be volume (three-dimensional). Square units are two-dimensional.
