It seems to me that alot of the people with college degrees that work with helping people end up having to take alot of psycology classes but not very many philosopy classes. Is my perspective on this wrong? Does understanding psycology mean you get philosopy? Is psycology more important because its an actualy science? Is learning philosophy more ment for someones own time then school time?

Please remember the fact that any Ph.D on any subject has to be a philosophy expert.... in my view philosophy is not a subject.. it is just a way of thinking. For that very reason, perhaps, no other category here at YA attracts such variety of questioners and questions as this one called philosophy.

Philosophy is more of a study of mankind as a whole, and how the "whole" experiences the world, were as psychology concentrates more on how an individual views and experiences the world.
People who work in psychology matriculate toward knowing theories of defined ills, as well as how to treat them according to the works of those such as Freud, Jung, Erikson, Horney, Fromm, and Skinner. After college psych majors are required to pass a board exam in order to become licensed. The questions cover theories of physiologist not philosophers.
If you are asking why isn't philosophy as important to learn as psychology, then it sounds like you are more interested in learning about the whole. If you are interested in them both, then take one as a major and one as a minor.
Understanding psych doesn't automatically mean that you will get philosophy. It was my experience that philosophy exposed the student more to world religions that psychology.
I would suggest that you make an appointment with one of the philosophy teachers and ask them what kinds of careers are best benefited by having a philosophy background. That might clear things up for you as to your question on if it is more meant for someone to learn on their own time. Ask questions, you might find that this is more the area for you and you will become more aware of how it will affect you after graduation.

I think philosophy is seen as less important to the academic and business world because it's more about personal belief than anything.
like you said, psychology is more of an actual science and thus more important....or...something....
I dont' know. I don't agree with most of what I learn in psychology and I love philosophy so, I'm pretty bias on the matter.

I dropped philosophy class after the first day because I felt I already knew the little philosophical ditties they were talking about and going to talk about. But I probably missed out on some trippy conversations latter on in the class. But I got an A in phych, though, it was easier and my dorm was a party dorm.

As there are many people on earth, everything's gonna be opinionated. Philosophy is quite an old subject. I think people deem it unimportant now that we solved practically every mystery of the earth, or so they say. But I think it's really fun to philososize things! Like Gods or nature. I guess college officials don't.

I believe that both psychology and philosophy should be part of the curriculum because the knowledge of both in the UK is woe full.It shows in, when I am explain, even the most fundamental concepts of life - people do not understand. They go off in their 19c world.

However - it is in the interests of the establishment that people do not learn philosophy because, if taught correctly, is all about questioning. AND WE CANNOT HAVE THAT!

Philosophy is depicted as another dead science by the practical pursuant of empirical evidences. Philosophy is more closely associated with theology. I enjoy philosophy but it won't help you get a position in accounting.

Philosophy teaches people to bash the real world without having any solutions. Being a Political Scientist, have read "The Republic" from front to back, and while it is brilliant, it tells me nothing on how to fix social security and whether or not we should be fighting a war in Iraq.

you're surprising- yet purely in part. What you think of grow to be actual surprising while Aristotle grow to be around. because of the fact then, philosophy has branched out into different disciplines, arithmetic and physics, as an occasion. Scholasticism that held sway till at last renaissance served as handmaid of religion. Which, in effect, potential a dogmatic end grow to be given and philosophy had to locate proofs to justify it. i think Kant grow to be the pioneer of present day philosophy. He bumped off the final strains of scholasticism yet in the technique, he grew to become metaphysics the different way up. modern-day philosophy has an extremely comfortable activity to accomplish. It has to locate the excellent regulation with which info gleaned by using different sciences can slot in. in this feeling, it stands at a 2nd get rid of from observable info ( observable is used here in widest experience). I agree you have positioned philosophy on the pedestal it merits. yet I disagree it is going to be a substantial undertaking alongside math and technology for the period of grade college. My argument is scholars lack adulthood point to understand philosophy. we would desire to attend till at last one has grasped lots of the info. to offer an occasion, Stephen Hawking's attempt to locate TOE (thought of each and every thing) is quite philosophical in nature.
