Ok here's the deal. Feeding wise I think maybe he's just picky at times. The gravel thing is very natural for them to do. Oscars can recognize thier owners well and maybe he's very excited to see you and this does happen. I think you should double check your water chemistry focusing on the nitrites. High nitrites in the water can leave fish sluggish with a lack of appetite. If this is not the case, vary up his diet. Mix in a feeding of some blood worms, then next feeding give him some tubifex, then try some brine shrimp, then try flakes, maybe toss in some feeder guppies too. Give that a shot if the nitrites are not elevated and let me know how that turns out.
JV
Not saying feed him all that at once. On feedings try one thing, the next day give him another choice and so forth. DONT OVER FEED HIM. He's an Oscar and as colorful and playful as he is, he's also literally not smart enough to know to stop eating, he will eat and eat and eat as long as you have food in there.

First of all, Ryan, just because your goldfish died in a FIVE GALLON!!! tank that you left them in to suffocate despite all of our warnings, doesn't mean this oscar is going to! You really should not have fish! Oscars act like this all the time, and this person actually has a great tank for one oscar with a pleco! Oscars are just cool. I would try to feed him Hiroka? pellets, and also some brine shrimp? also as a snack. Good luck!

I'd suggest a playmate maybe another Oscar preferably slightly larger seen as you need to introduce a new fish.
As for burying themselves I've had that before I've no idea why they did it but they seemed to think it was fun.
I kept my Oscars in a tank in the garage I had about 20 aquariums between 30/60 gallon (imperial) in there and then had space in the house so put them in a bucket and introduced them to the new home. Two days later they stopped feeding, and after a week i was getting frantic, these where a full grown pair 13/14in. Nothing i did could get them to feed so i put them back in the bucket and took them to there old home, they fed instantly. Two days later they stopped feeding again, again a week went by, then into the bucket again and into the tank in the house, guess what they fed straight away and two days later stopped.
This time i was wise to it put em in the bucket out the back door in the front into the same tank and they fed.
Needless to say ppl found it strange when i was wondering around with two tiger Oscars in a bucket, but for the rest of there lives that was the only way i could keep em happy, they went on to breed several times and better parents you couldn't get. Only fault was they liked to go for a ride in a bucket.
Of course getting someone to come feed the fish was no problem but asking them to take the Oscars for a walk when i went on holiday got some funny looks.

yeah your oscar isn't all that odd. i have two tiger oscars and they pretty much do the same things. oscars are kinda weird like that. mine even lay on the bottom of their tank on their sides ... sometimes i think they're dead but then they look at me with those big eyes and swim around. mine jump too, they really love feeding time. oh and i would reccomend switching from flakes to some sort of pellets, they have oscar food in pet stores made just for them oh and i also hope you have or plan on getting a big enough tank for your oscar, since they grow up pretty big

I had two female oscars who "buried" themselves in the gravel to clear a spot to lay eggs. They also tried to jump out of the tank frequently. I found if I fed them too frequently they would ignore their food, but it could be as other people have said, that the fish misses how you used to feed it. Perhaps your fish is bored and would like a friend. My fish also loved to play. I put a piece of rose quartz in the shape of a ball my tank (big enough so they couldn't swallow it) and they would pick it up and spit it out at each other.

I had an Oscar that lived to be 13. Whenever he buried up in the gravel, he usually had the very beginnings of ick. Watch him closely. If it progresses too far it'll kill him.
I think sudden appearances startles them, so do quick movements.
Mine liked to hide behind the greenery I put in the tank, especially if we had strangers in the house. Mostly though he loved to pull them up and shake them.
I really miss that fish. He wouldn't eat for anyone but me, so if I had to go out of town, it had to be short trips. He proved to me that fish do have personalities.

nope. i admire MICHAEL JACKSON. he became into an entertainer so no i do no longer think of its strange. besides he became into in a action picture called The Wiz and nicely there is that it relatively is it even nonetheless technically he wasn't appearing. oh nicely, i do no longer care why they did it, i'm only happy they did. as for why farrah became into surpassed over i do no longer know why, yet its unlike if mj stole her spot or something. each and each %flashed around the reveal screen for like 3 seconds, what could have been 3 extra to contain farrah fawcett. besides the oscars lasted for like 3 and a nil.5 hours. it became into too long!! the clips for the nominees have been too long.

oscars jump -- and the will burrow too. neither of those is that odd.
fish practice selective memory. maybe he recognizes tasty food as coming from you directly and the stuff you just drop in isn't as appealing or he isn't recognizing it as food. in reverse i often get bettas to eat by moving it around like its a little bug on the top of the water.
he is jumping when he sees you because you mean he is gettting food. many fish learn to associate humans with food but oscars are thought to be able to distinguish between humans.

Sounds like he has a personality!!
How many do you have in a tank?
Maybe it's lonely or doesn't get along with the others?
He probably misses you hand feeding him. Fish are very routine liking creatures. You break their routine and sometimes they get confused.
You should take the time to hand feed it and make it a special time.
